United Kingdom Requiring New Travel Authorization in 2025

Travelers to the United Kingdom after the new year will have one more item to add to their packing checklist: electronic travel authorization (ETA).

According to the U.S. Department of State, beginning January 8, U.S. citizens visiting for “…tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study for 6 months or less” will need to apply for an ETA through the U.K. Government website.

The ETA may be used in place of a visa if visiting for less than six months, travelling to the U.K. for certain types of work and in the country for a layover, among other reasons.

The cost of applying is £10 (approximately $12) and an answer is usually received within three working days.

Side Trip…

The ETA webpage recommends downloading their app from either the Apple app store or Google play the for the most streamlined application process. Travelers should have photos ready of their passport and the face of the person applying.
